Brief information about Cieszyn.

        Cieszyn is an old monumental town, which is beautifully situated on hills nearby the well known touristically atractive places of Beskid ¦l±ski such as Szczyrk, Wisła, Ustroń.

        The town is an important road junction both for internal and international communication. There are four country borders in the city. Lots of cultural atractions, sport events and interesting monuments of our region are available for tourists.



Worth seeing places:

Town Squere - was founded in 1496. Present shape was taken on in the end of 19th century. Its southern frontage is the Town Hall.


Lutheran Church of Jesus - is situated at Church Squere and it was built in 18th century in late baroque style. There is a two-storey choir with organ from late baroque. Inside the church there is a possibility of holding about 7 thousand of people including 3,5 thousand of sitings.


The Three Brothers Well - is linked to the legend about the foudation of Cieszyn in 810. It the 14th century it belonged to the Dominican Order. Up to the 19th century water from the well was drawn for the use by the town brewery in ¦rutarska Street. In 1898 a cast-iron pavilion was built over it. Three plaques in Latin, Polish and German on its walls use to tell the story about the foudation of Cieszyn.


The Castle Hill - had already been settled by the 5th century B.C. The fortified stronghold founded in the 9th century was raised to the rank of castellany sometime before 1155 and in 1290 it became the capital of the independent Duchy of Cieszyn. A magnificent gothic castle was built in the 15th century. The upper castle consisted of living quarters surrounded by a defensive wall with turrets and a tower. The lower castle consisted of servants quarters, stores and outbuilding, dugeons, towers and drawbridge.



The Rotunda of St. Nicolas - is one of the oldest sacred architectual relics in Poland. It was founded in the end of 11th century in romanesque style. In the neighbourhood there was a flat of the commandt of the castle. The Rotund was a chapel and a parochial church during several centuries and probably there was also the oldest parochial cementary in Cieszyn next to it. Nowadays there are cencerts organized inside the Rotunda.


The Piast Tower - is a remain of gothic castle from 14th century. It was being covered with high, late gothic roof from 15th till 19th century. In 1989 it was reconstructed. It is a very interesting scenic place.


The Theatre - is situated at Theatre Squere and was designed in viennese style by famous European architects Felner and Helner from Vien. It has a rotary scene, mezzanine for orchestra and the three-storey house with 630 seatings. After the World War II it was named Adam Mickiewicz Theatre.


Cieszyn Historical Library - the building was built on basements of a mint that was founded by Mieszko I. Dukes of Cieszyn had the right to mint their own money from the 13th century till the expiry of the dynasty in 1655. Since 1992 it has been being completely renovated and enlarged. The Historical Library aquires the most valuable volumins, literature and manuscripts in the whole Salesian area. There is a restaurant in there now, and the Historical Library has been moved to another building.
